EMPATHY: Project Happiness – Equipping Young People with Emotional Resilience, Self-Awareness, and Empathy

EMPATHY: Project Happiness – Equipping Young People with Emotional Resilience, Self-Awareness, and Empathy | Impact Trends | Scoop.it

Project Happiness (PH) teaches students the skills to build emotional resilience, self-awareness, and empathy. Informed by neuroscience, positive psychology, and mindfulness, PH “teaches kids to be happy and strong from the inside” and helps adults strengthen social and emotional skills as well, said founder Randy Taran.

Project Happiness was selected as an Early Entry Prize Winner of the Building Vibrant Communities: Activating Empathy to Create Change competition. For more about how Project Happiness teaches empathy skills, check out the project video.

Taran strongly believes that tackling the increasing levels of suicide, aggression, low self-esteem, and low-graduation rates among young people will require teaching students empathy skills and helping them strengthen these skills through practice.

"Bullying and the issue of empathy is not going to be solved by telling people what not to do,’” Taran said. “We have to address it at the root level. Individuals—whatever their age—would greatly benefit from the skill of self-awareness . . . it creates that pause between action, the trigger or stressor, and the reaction . . . it allows a person to consider and respond, rather than react, which promotes kindness and connectedness.”

A growing number of innovative schools across the United States are recognizing the importance of social and emotional learning for both student well being and academic success. Recently, a large scale study found that preschoolers who improved social and emotional skills were more likely to be engaged in learning.

EMPATHY: Why is Empathy a Key Ingredient in Creating Safer Roads by 2020?

EMPATHY: Why is Empathy a Key Ingredient in Creating Safer Roads by 2020? | Impact Trends | Scoop.it

There is a fascinating correlation between higher levels of inequality in societies, and countries with worst number of road crashes, deaths and injuries, like India. Roads are the only places where people from all the economic classes are forced to share space. An inability to understand people from other economic classes, their struggles, pains, and priorities, makes people behave irresponsibly on the roads.

The Ashoka Community's insight:

There surely is a need for a fresh perspective towards road safety, and the work of several social entrepreneurs proves that it is possible to build the skill of empathy—and that it is an effective solution to some of the most nagging problems.

CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT: 3 Ways To Return Power To The People

CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT: 3 Ways To Return Power To The People | Impact Trends | Scoop.it

Hundreds of organizations are facilitating feedback loops in their schools, neighborhoods, and countries. But creating a system for giving voice to the people is only half the battle. Organizations must also find ways to “close” these feedback loops, as Syria Tracker has, so that local perspectives aren’t just informative–they’re transformative.

The Ashoka Community's insight:

“The last decade has been about giving people voice. But this has not resulted in a lot of changed behavior,” says Dennis Whittle, a former World Bank principal economist and current executive director of Ashoka Changemakers. “The next decade must focus on ensuring that those voices are not only heard, but acted on.”
